Daily Puzzle Hint

Anagram solver

Enter a word or a set of letters to find every word that uses all of them exactly once. Great for crosswords, word games and puzzles like Connections, which often hide anagrams.

Type some letters to start.

How the anagram solver works

An anagram must use every letter you type, no more and no fewer. The solver checks your letters against a dictionary of more than 270,000 words and returns only exact matches, so LISTEN gives SILENT, ENLIST, TINSEL and INLETS.

These are real results from the solver. The count shows how many anagrams our dictionary holds for each word, including some rare ones; the list shows the everyday words among them.

Five-letter words with the most anagrams

Some sets of five letters can be rearranged into a surprising number of words. These are the biggest groups in our five-letter list. They include rare words, but they explain why common letters like S, E, A, R and T make such good Wordle openers: one guess tests letters shared by a huge number of words.

How to solve anagrams without a solver

  1. Spot the awkward letters. Q, J, X and Z only fit in a few places, so place them first.
  2. Find common pairs. TH, CH, SH, ST, ER, ED and ING often stay together.
  3. Try endings. If you have an S, E and D, test the word as a plural or a past tense.
  4. Alternate vowels and consonants. Most English words switch between them, which cuts the options quickly.
  5. Check here. If you are still stuck, type the letters into the solver above to see every answer.

Questions

What is an anagram?

An anagram is a word made by rearranging all the letters of another word, using each letter exactly once. LISTEN and SILENT are anagrams of each other.

Does the anagram solver find phrases?

It finds single words that use all of your letters. For words that use only some of the letters, use the word unscrambler.

Can I include a missing letter?

Yes. Type a question mark and the solver will try every letter in that spot.

How do you solve an anagram by hand?

Write the letters in a circle, pull out common pairs such as TH, ST, ER and ING, then try them at the start and end of the word. Placing the vowels between consonants usually reveals the answer quickly.

Which word has the most anagrams?

Among five-letter words in our list, the letters of APERS make 13 different words, though many of them are rare.

Is an anagram the same as a palindrome?

No. An anagram rearranges letters into a new word. A palindrome reads the same forwards and backwards, like LEVEL or RADAR.

Why does my word have no anagrams?

Many words have no single-word anagram. Try adding a blank with a question mark, or use the word unscrambler to see shorter words.
