How to play Wordle
Wordle gives you six tries to find one five-letter word. Everyone in the world gets the same word each day, and a new one arrives at midnight in your time zone.
- Make a first guess. Type any real five-letter word. A word with common letters, like SLATE, tells you the most.
- Read the colours. Each letter turns green, yellow or grey to show how close it is (see the key below).
- Use what you learned. Keep green letters where they are, move yellow letters somewhere new, and stop using grey letters.
- Narrow it down. With each guess the list of possible words shrinks. Most players finish in three to five guesses.
- Share your grid. When you finish, the game gives you a coloured grid with no letters, so you can share your result without spoiling it.
What the colours mean
- AGreen: The letter is in the word and in the right spot.
- AYellow: The letter is in the word but in a different spot.
- AGrey: The letter is not in the word at all.
Best Wordle starting words
A good opener tests the letters that appear most often in Wordle answers. These five are consistently strong; which one you pick matters less than using the result well.
Tests S, L, T plus the two most common vowels in Wordle answers. A strong all-round opener.
Swaps in C, R and N. R is one of the most common letters in answers, so CRANE often lands a yellow early.
Covers the same ground as CRANE but checks T, which helps with -ATE and -ACE endings.
Checks four vowels at once. Good for finding vowels fast, weak on consonants, so follow it with a consonant-heavy word.
Three vowels plus R and S. A solid choice if you like learning vowel positions first.
Wordle tips that actually help
- Use your second guess to test five new letters rather than chasing one yellow. You learn more, faster.
- Remember that letters can repeat. Words like PEEVE or LLAMA catch out players who assume five different letters.
- Think in common endings: -ER, -LY, -ED, -CH, -SH and -IGHT cover a large share of answers.
- When two or three words fit, guess a word that splits them, even if it cannot be the answer. It often saves a turn.
- Try hard mode once in a while. Being forced to reuse your green and yellow letters trains you to place them precisely.
